Well, season's essentially over. Too big of a gap now, and too much of a miracle needed.
I expect the Flames to continue to fight for a playoff spot, but now I think you have to shift to rewarding and prioritizing what's important.
Absolutely nobody on the team should be a question mark. However many games left is irrelevant when it comes down to who should stay or go. I look at the last 10 games or so as being more critical - who stepped up? Who looked out of place. I have 4 or 5 guys that I really want to keep, and around 4 or 5 that I say need to go. Rest are just filler. This was the last important game upon which we could measure who is willing to do what is necessary to help this team win.
I want Kylington and Phillips in next game. If Monahan is injured, shut him down already. Nesterov or Stone (Stone has been excellent for the most part though) can sit so that Kylington can get at least a fraction of the development time that they should be giving him. Mackey should come in as well. Might as well get Ruzicka in.
Player/Replacement:
Nesterov/Kylington
Stone/Mackey
Ryan/Ruzicka
Norstrom-Ritchie-Robinson-Phillips
However, best bet to increase the draft position is to keep playing these vets.
Discouraging step back this season, especially coming at the most embarrassing time in having to play all the Canadian teams. Flames are a laughing-stock this year. We can argue all we want over the last few years' worth of performances, but 2nd in the NHL and losing to a good team in Colorado was only mildly embarrassing. Losing last year to Dallas who were a cup finalist, but seconds away from being up 3-1 in the series wasn't too embarrassing. This season? I feel it has been embarrassing.
I am guessing that what was wrong with this team is that they learned to stop working hard. That's what Gulutzan taught them, and Peters, and Ward. Practices became slow and uninspired. They then play like they practice (something I have always combined). That is in large measure why the Oilers sucked so bad for years. I said that Tippett is a good coach, and he does have the Oilers playing harder and having success, even though the majority of that team is crap.
Sutter is a damn good coach. I am sure he knows which players he is able to crack open and which players he thinks he needs to kick to the curb. Hopefully him and Treliving can agree and Treliving can start making the necessary moves.
I do think that this can be a quick turnaround. I am all for a complete rebuild, but it just isn't going to happen, and I do think a rebuild isnt the only way to go about it either.
I expect a big off-season here. Don't know what is going to happen, and I am not even sure that Treliving will still be around, but changes are sure to come.
