What matters in the long run is his old age, his high cap hit, his very long term, his injury history, and hic NCM.
Markstrom could've won a Vezina this year and I still would have been concerned about the last 3 years of the contract.

Well, then. You worry too much.
Markstrom carries the #10 highest cap-hit of all goalies in the NHL. Between 2018–20 he was one of only ten goalies to start in 100 games, and of that group he ranks #3 in SP and #5 in GAA. I tend to think his performance this year has been largely the product of adjusting to a new team: he has posted the worst SP of his entire career since he became a starter. He was fantastic from the start, then struggled after coming back from injury, and then took time adjusting to a new system in which he sees A LOT fewer quality chances than he has at any point of his NHL career. In his three years as a starter in Vancouver he was facing an average of 32 SOG/GP; in Calgary he is facing only 25.
Markstrom only just turned 31-years-old, and insofar as goalies are concerned is still not anywhere close to worrying about his age. The Edmonton Oilers are starting a 39-year-old; Vegas, a 36-year-old; Dallas, a soon-to-be 34-year-old; NYI, a soon-to-be 33-year-old.
