I've always been utterly fascinated by submarine and anti submarine warfare. There's an absolutely great book called Unrestricted Warfare by James DeRose, It talks about how the US Navy in WW2 changed its submarine commanders from conservative captains to the risk taking ultra aggressive skippers that shaped modern day submarine tactics. It covers Captains like Mush Morton of the Wahoo, Dick O'Kane, George Grider. While we talk a lot about the roles of carriers and destroyers, and even battleships in WW2, Submarines had a huge role in strangling Japan, and demoralizing their Navy.
When we watch movies like the Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide, and other movies that feature Submarines as shiny clean ultra modern boats, we forget that the diesel electric boats in WW2 were tiny cramped, dirty and smelled of diesel fuel, seat, cigarette smoke and open bilges.
