I'm not really into football and never really gave the sport (and by extension, the CFL) a chance. Just not for me I guess.
With the CFL, the lack of teams just seems boring. It's too bad the American expansion failed years back, because that could have been a game changer. I know the NFL at one time propped up the CFL because it sometimes helped tweeners hone their skills until they were ready, but did they give up on the whole CFL as a an NFL development league idea?

I do think Jordan is right though that the tolerance to subsidize these things is a measure of affinity. I get that it is hard to swallow for a lot of people, but if Calgary doesn't do it, another city will. Eventually the arena needs to be replaced in order to host an NHL team. It either gets done or it doesn't, but I can all but guarantee it doesn't get done without some public money being used. Right or wrong, I don't see any way getting around it when the owners can just cash out rather than paying for the whole thing.
