If I were to put it on anything, I'd just say "chemistry". Sometimes it's mysterious, but when you find it, it's key to a good team.
I'd wager that Sam just never found any chemistry with Flames players over the years. I'd also wager that slotting him on on the bottom two lines in perpetuity ensured that he never had linemates good enough to find chemistry with either.

You say it’s bull####...but then repeat exactly what I said.
The coaching aspect is slotting him as a top 6 forward with skilled linemates
In a more sheltered offensive role.
Coach Q didn’t somehow talk to him and turn him into a better player, he just slotted him and used him in a way more suited to his skill set.
