The derailleur issue sounds like its just out of tune. I would suggest playing with the barrel adjuster after watching a YouTube video on derailleur adjustment so you understand how it works. If the tuning is only slightly off the barrel should allow for a no tools fix.
Otherwise, adjusting a derailleur can be a pain, but doable without a bike stand and with just a Phillips screwdriver or multitool. YouTube - particularly the Park Tool video series - is a savior for these adjustments.
