I admit it's hard to assess a guy like Monahan because he's not offensively dynamic, I had the same opinion as you during the losing stretch, but I've been trying to really pay attention to his play away from the puck since Darryl praised him for doing all the things he asked and I'm starting to notice some really good things defensively. Maybe I'm "looking" for positives, but I'm just trying to see what Darryl sees.
The new line he's on is playing a lot better and they just seem like they should breakout for some goals soon. They've had a lot of chances and offensive zone pressure.

Monny has been doing this, for the most part, all year long.
It was just lost/ignored mostly during the long streak of ineptitude by the team as a whole.
His offense will return at some point and when that happens he will be considered an upper-echelon center in the league. When and where that happens are up for debate for sure, but it will. He is coming into what used to be "prime" years. So his path is different than most in recent times, but not unusual at all.
