Plus Tanev has been terrific this year, but that doesn't mean he will be through the life of the contract. He probably won't be.

So all those factors have to be weighted
- Near-term and long-term salary implications
- Current and future quality of play for each player
- Potential return for Gio at the deadline next year
- Probability that Gio gets claimed
- Probability that Tanev gets claimed.

Let's say Gio can get you a late 1st at the TDL next year. Do you protect him to try and get that type of asset?

Right now Tanev is probably worth more as a player on the roster, but by next TDL Gio could be worth more as an asset to the organization
I think you also have to consider what you could get by using that cap space - ideally a sweetener with a bad deal/reclamation project that also fits a team need (say B Connolly). There's also injury risk of getting no return at all on Gio (whereas I'd argue losing him to ED the return is Kylington...).

I think it is safe to say no other teams are that high on him either.
It does cost real $$$, and an acquiring team would have to keep them on their roster or else have to re-waive.

But your point is a good one. Even if I am right on lucic the flames probably make a move to have someone else to expose making it one of those 3.
Re-sign Ryan or Leivo or Nordstrom or anyone else.
