I like the guy, but he was a free UFA signing that we got good value out of this year, but that contract isn't likely to age well either.
Getting out of the final 3 years and $4M plus of that deal won't be a bad thing.

Tanev is the best defensive D I've seen in a long long time. It's a rare asset.
And we are talking about 1 year of no Gio (and no $6.75M). He's going to either retire or sign somewhere for super cheap afterwards, maybe Calgary.
