Honestly if it comes down to having to give an asset to Seattle to keep Gio then just leave Tanev unprotected and let him go, or see if a team wants to trade for him prior to the expansion draft. (This of course is all assuming that the Flames management won't disrespect Gio by leaving him unprotected, which tends to be my belief)
I like the guy, but he was a free UFA signing that we got good value out of this year, but that contract isn't likely to age well either.
Getting out of the final 3 years and $4M plus of that deal likely won't be seen as a bad thing in the near future.
