Maybe he wanted to focus on crediting Monahan directly since he's had a lot of criticism.
And/Or he wants to Monahan to find his confidence so he wanted to focus on complimenting him.
Or he has higher expectation of 13 & 19 to be the elite forwards and doesn't want to give them credit anytime they have a good game (since it needs to be that way every game).
Or he's just rambling a bit to not give Francis the soundbites he wants.
This is Sutter we're talking about.
Interpreting what he said as "I like Monahan, I don't like Gaudreau" is people just acting Francis like and trying to fit their own narratives.
