I think you are bending things to suit your own narrative a bit there.
Earlier in the year no one wanted to assume Derek Ryan's contract for nothing, and pay a waiver fee. Doesn't mean he has no value. He won't return much, but I'm confident that the team will be able to trade him.
Prior to the Covid situation hand grenading the cap and revenues, Ryan is a player that the Flames would have been able to trade, and the way he had played, they likely would have needed something much nicer than they'll get to want to move him.
As for Pearson, given today's market conditions, I personally don't see why the Canucks handed out this money and term. But it's not a terrible contract either. Even with a flat cap...it's still over 80 million so a winger who can score 15 goals at 3 milion isn't ideal, but it's not that out of line.
