If I recall correctly, Colorado was absolutely terrible in the last 2 months of that season. They were tanking hard. As disgraceful as it was, it got them into a good spot for landing MacKinnon/Barkov.
Calgary ended up finishing 5-5 in the last 10 games. If the Flames had finished 3-7, they would have had the 2nd best odds (Colorado's lottery-winning spot). Calgary, Carolina, Nashville, Tampa and Colorado were all within 3 points.
That's why the Flames should ship away all of the UFAs. Even one game can make a large outcome in the draft order.
