They were also the 2nd worst team in the league that season, so while yes - it’s “luck” but they put themselves in the situation to get lucky. The worst team in the league that year was Florida, who got Barkov.
As of today the Flames would draft 7th in this summer’s draft (pending the lottery). The goal for the remainder of this season should be to bottom out as hard as they can.
This is where the general manager needs to step in and take the feet out from under the players in my opinion. They didn’t get it done, now put the team first. Gain some assets, and hope that the team tumbles further down the standings and improves their lottery odds. It’s ugly work, but required.
