I don’t see the evidence of ownership doing this that you do. I’d argue the biggest failing of ownership is being unable to find the right COO for the hockey ops group. In this case they put their faith in Brian Burke to find that person. He’s forgotten more about pro hockey than I will ever know, but i’m not convinced he’s a great evaluator of management talent.

I think the success of meeting a short-term objective hinged on
- The top players on the club taking another step. Instead they regressed. Though even if they had maintained their peak level this would be a pretty good team.
- Sam Bennett being more than he is.
I think he assembled a team that had a chance of being a contender if the above happened, and now that it hasn't - they are back a few steps.
