Because cap space is king and you need to rebuild thr culture from the ground up. You are right...the Flames likely have a 2-3 year reload ahead to get out from Gio, Lucic, Brouwer etc. However at least you can build a winning culture from the ground up. Sutter + Lucic + ??? are the kind of leaders you want to build a winner around.

Man...that last sentence was shocking...I tried to think of leaders on the team that have a winning history in the NHL...
