He would be a huge lose for Edmonton. He is likely worth a bigger contract.
But you are right, Edmonton is in for a world of contract hurt.

Not sure about "quite a bit better". It would be interesting to see Monahan with McDavid
Nuge has played about 2 3rds of his even strength ice with Mcdavid. Also gets about 3 mins more ice per game than Monahan and almost a minute more per game on the PP. Nuge and McDavid have been on the ice for about 160 mins on the PP together vs 7 mins for Nuge without McDavid. The oiler top 4 guys basically get to play almost the entire 2 mins of every PP this year but the Flames rarely do this. Monahan may not be as good as Nuge defensively but Nuge is not great defensivley either but he does have seriously inflated numbers offensively due to playing over 70% off his ice time with McDavid
McDavid's numbers are way better away from Nuge as well but that usually means paying with Leon so it does make sense.
Monahan does play with Johnny but he is not McDavid.
If Monahan didn't get hurt all the time he is much better than Nuge IMO. But with the injuries I might take Nuge slightly ahead of Monahan
