Is that where we are at now?

Does anyone really care how much actual cash he receives or are we going to talk about what actually matters?

I get it. He is struggling this season. No one has questioned that but even in that scenario he is still among the top players on this team this season and when you add in his history he still a top shelf NHL player over the last 5.

People complain about this club and its mediocre ways...yet want to send the one guy up front that any team in the NHL would die to have on their roster.

Its just freaking weird.
I think people are concerned because his 9M salary next year requires a qualifying offer of the same amount.

Now, that doesn't mean it will require $9M to sign Tkachuk long-term. He can accept a long-term contract for any amount.

But it does give his camp leverage. If the Flames qualify him for 1 year at 9M, he becomes a free agent after that season. The Flames can avoid a qualifying offer and sign him long-term at a lower cap hit, but essentially, if Tkachuk wants to leave, he can leave.
