The first reported instance of the phrase "trick or treat" being used is from the town of Blackie (near Lethbridge) in 1927.
That's not bad, considering Blackie only has 343 people.

Interestingly,
Merriam-Webster dates the first usage of the phrase to the exact same day but in the Calgary Herald, and then used the very next day in the Lethbridge Herald. According to the
original researcher, both stories were referring to the practice in Blackie.
As per the Merriam-Webster link, variations of the phrase occurred in the 20s in Regina and Red Deer. I had no idea the phrase originated in this part of the world.
