The original deck is what is on the property report. I am basically going to recreate the original deck in size but with updated materials (pressure treated lumber, composite decking). Typically unless you are only replacing the decking surface a building permit is required, not sure if composite decking changes that or not. If you are replacing the structure (joists/beams) then a permit is required. It'll be treated as a new structure and will need to meet the deck setback rules (not allowed in sideyard) previous deck location won't factor into it.
