What single good reason did the flames leadership team have for holding onto gio that looks like a good reason right now?

Keeping Gio is not the problem. The D mix on the whole is a problem.

Also, he’s the captain and the Flames have gotten more than full value out of the bulk of the contract. There is some honour in the org. You need to accept and deal with that

Gio needs to be slotted middle pair at best, ideally bottom 6, unfortunately.

Rasmus is at best middle 4 with a better D partner. That Gio/Ras pairing is doing the top 4 D / top 6 matchup job and getting shredded, and seemingly challenged on quick transitions and offensive support.

And Ras’s contract is looking really not so hot compared to guys like Hanifin and Brodie

Nesterov looked composed early but has looked worse. And Valimaki is growing. A bottom pairing that is ok but nothing special right now. They were more error prone earlier in the year but that late penalty was bad tonight

And having said that, the defensive part of the D has generally been good but a couple of untimely errors happen while Sutter thinks we should be able to win 1-0
