Like the original poster, you're giving up possession. When I was coaching minor hockey or playing, I always believed in making the other team take it away from you then giving it up. Dump and chase you are essentially giving it up and trying to retrieve it. That's not an efficient way of playing or using your energy IMO.

Sort of correct, but it also gives you an opportunity to punish the defenders with crushing hits on the boards. And a quick forcheck has as much a chance of not more to retrieve the puck as a dman that has to turn around or skate backwards.
It's not giving the puck away, it's placing it in the offensive zone for your teammates to skate to.
