Come on, Iginla was never the consensus best player in the league. He was never talked about as the best player to ever play the game. The media attention on McDavid is unprecedented in the NHL... Crosby back in the early 2000s is the closest comparable but it's not on the same level as McDavid... I'm not even saying it is unearned, but you can't compare McDavid with Iginla when it comes to media coverage... it isn't even in the same universe.
