Some guys just don't skate as well as others. In fact, 99% of people don't skate as well as NHL players.
MT is actually one of the very few players on the planet who can survive off his other skills and that is why he is in the NHL when most people who skate like that max out in high junior or career minor leaguers

Draisaitl really improved his skating at about the same age. Chara, Boyle, Mark Stone, Mike Peca too. Perhaps he knows but because he’s been able to get by on his other skills Tkachuk hasn’t ever really tried hard (though I knows he’s gone to Dawn Braid at least once for a session). But it’s caught up with him now. He may never be a great skater but I bet he can improve it some more.
