I don't doubt Treviling reached out to Sutter, but I believe the push to do that was based on direction from ownership.

In 2016 when the Flames hired Gulutzan, Sutter was still coaching in LA. Sutter announced his retirement from coaching on June 20, 2018—just two months after the Flames hired Bill Peters. It is anyone's guess as to how available he was to return in the in-between time.

Should I give the GM any credit based on his 7 year track record? The press conference was littered with the term "accountability", the mess that is the Calgary Flames has a large part to do with his managerial skills, he is ultimately responsible for the coaches and the players assembled.
Apologies, not 3 hires, 2. Yes I'm including Peters in this mix because BT hired Peters basically immediately after the season, 6 days after GG was canned on April 23rd. Questions were asked why the rush and why not wait till the offseason when more candidates would be made available. Then he extends Ward after the bubble.
Whether people want to admit it or not, BTs handling of the coaching duties has been a mess. He is on the hot seat and you could see it in the PC today.
Regardless of the back and fourth with some of you, I'm happy Sutter is now the coach, that is step 1, i'm sure more will come once the season concludes.
