I think the guys from Red Letter Media said it best. Star Trek Discovery is what happens when the Jocks take over Science Fiction from the Nerds.

The think that they pointed out that I didn't notice before, but explains the mess in terms of writing and the shoulder patting during episodes "Science B$$$$" or "Math B44444" with self congratulatory high fives, is when you watch the season two opening credits, there are over 20 producers named. It explains why the writing is all over the place, and things aren't connected.
