No I don't think trading Gaudreau will necessarily be a mistake, and I don't think the final judgment will depend on how he performs elsewhere.
There is a calculus that has to be considered from the Flames perspective and it has been discussed here at length;
What kind of return can the Flames get for him, does he want to be here, what does his contract look like long term, etc.
I'm more focused on his history with the Flames and how it is looking more and more likely that it is going to be another case of a dynamic star player that didn't realize team success with the Flames.
It is very easy to be critical of Gaudreau (and Monahan, too for that matter), but irrespective of whether he is an elite player or just a star, or whatever you want to call him, players of his caliber don't grow on trees, and when you have that player on your team, as a manger you MUST find a way to be relevant.
