I think most people really underestimate the value of coaching. Strong coaching is strong leadership, keying players in to the things they are doing or not doing, and motivating and building belief in that feedback they are providing. It absolutely makes a difference, when it's been demonstrated that mistakes mean benching (and frankly, they should. They sure did when I played), so yah players will follow direction and not fall back on to instinct. These guys have had systems drilled into them their whole life, they've adjusted their play their whole life, if this is not working it's because of what the coach is telling them. You can't have 23 guys go rogue and do what they think is right, or you're gonna get beer league levels of play making. A good coach will turn this group around
