I went and looked on google maps, and I can honestly say I never knew that to be illegal. Put that one up there with U-turns then.

It makes sense on busy streets, but I'm sure I've turned left across Center into businesses when its clear.

I know when its busy, I never try to make it across multiple lanes of traffic, always turn into the close lane and swing around.
