He's never had a defense behind him that was better than 23rd overall and has been saddled with three historically bad NFL defenses as the Raiders are currently in the worst decade stretch of defensive football in the history of the NFL.
If you look at his career stats trajectory he's on pace to finish top 20 or better all time in QBR, TD's, Yards, Completions, 4th quarter comebacks, etc. He's basically hit 4000 yards five times (counting 3987 & 3937 seasons) so he's pretty well a consistent top 15 QB with elite arm talent. The win/loss record is poor but I don't know how many winning seasons Mahomes would have with some of these Raiders historically bad defenses. I have no issues with the extension as it's not like they are going to be able to trade for Watson and offense isn't the issue for the Raiders. The reality is that it's all about improving the defense for the Raiders.
