I was kinda pissed last night, I mean, even in their worst days the Flames didn't deadstick the Battle of Alberta like a badly wounded fighter spiraling into the turf. But frankly they did over the last two games. We can talk about shots on net, and Koskinen playing like an NHL goalie. But lets be honest, even with those shots, the Flames were neither dangerous or looked determined.
So I went to bed last night after a few stiff shots of Whiskey (No ice), and expected to wake up and be crabby about it, and to have to respond to friends of mine who are Edmonton fans.
And yes I got a lot of texts, with the whole, ha ha, your team sucks, blah blah blah. I decided to respond to each of them Iron Sheik style with a hale and hearty "Good Morning, go F yourself".
Then I realized that as I read the game recap, that at some point last night, my give a crap meter flipped from the "Yes I do" setting to "ah whatever man" setting.
This team has been dud like all season, not showing up for long periods, not looking particularly determined. There are a few players that are putting in respectable or more then respectable levels of compete. However for the most part, this team when I'm watching them doesn't inspire me, or make me do a Covid inspired self high five. Instead, I find it boring to watch a team that's so marginally engaged, and plays mind numbing stupid hockey at times.
Now if this was a normal relationship, I would sit the Flames down and say "We need to see other people, but its not you, its me" followed by mumbled statements about "needing to work on myself" and become a better person. But with the statement of hockey, the speech is "I need to go to seminary school" and its "Not me, its you" and "You need to go away and work on yourself Flames".
Frankly its sad as a hockey fan to say "I'm not mad", "I'm not sad" but "I'd rather build models using bricks made out of poop then watch you guys drift around the ice".
I don't know what changes the flames need to make, the issue feels cultural, and about 10 years old. But they need to fix it before the fans return to the building, because with tight wallets and mass unemployment, they might end up continuing to play in front of empty buildings, because the Flames are not good value as an entertainment value in the city.
