The key to what I said was "tried" to cheer for them. Calgary has never been my favourite team. Toronto and Colorado have always been who I cheer for. Yes Edmonton has been a dumpster fire for the past 10 years or so.
There's a big difference between them and Calgary though. At least McDavid can put on a show and make the games enjoyable to watch even if they are blown out. He can single handily win a game for Edmonton while Calgary hasn't had a player like that since maybe Iginla.
If Edmonton had landed Markstrom, I'd bet anything they'd be tops in the division. Calgary would 100% be dead last in the division if we didn't have him. At least Ottawa as bad as they are come out nightly and play their hearts out. Calgary doesn't come close to Winnipeg/Toronto or Montreal atm. It'll end up Toronto/Winnipeg/Montreal/Edmonton/Vancouver/Calgary/Ottawa in that order in the end.
One thing Vancouver does have is a pretty strong depth for scoring. Very young guys and if they can get some more chemistry going look out. Their downside atm is defense and goaltending.
As other's have mentioned, it seems the players have just quit playing for ward. No leadership, no drive, no intensity in the games. Outside of Dube and a couple others, Calgary is just a slow slow team. The winning teams are fast and physical.
Not really sure what they should do atm. Dump the entire core for draft picks and try and rebuild before the new rink in a few years?
Sadly unless management changes I think Calgary will be the same as it has been the last 5-6 years. Either barely making the playoffs/knocked out first round/garbage draft pick or they just miss the playoffs and get a 13 or 14th pick.
At least Gaudreau is playing a lot better this year. Really the only positive I've seen this season.
