Honestly I’m not even sure Ward believes in what he’s saying. I think he’s trying to balance his good guy assistant coach persona with being more of a hard ass head coach.
He rips the team in the media after the loss to the Canucks.
Then comes out the next day and backtracks a bit softening his works from the night before - Saying he doesn’t think the guys have a character issue or that they don’t care, that they just need to be more consistent.
Then he throws one of his “fun” practices where they have music playing and are trying to have more energy.
Then after another lifeless game tonight he says it’s “A step in the right direction”
Which to me just emphasizes what he wants from this team - passive, lifeless, and low risk hockey. Work hard while just playing passive low event hockey, that’s all Ward wants.
Sure they were stronger in their own end tonight but it was a BoA with no real passion, they generated absolutely nothing offensively, he still made ridiculous coaching decisions, and in the end they still lost without really threatening the Oilers in the 3rd.
The fact that he would be happy with that performance just reinforces to me that He does not value skill or creativity at all. Just work hard, play passive, and played low event hockey.
