I think coaches should be pressed to explain their in-game decisions. They're literally managing the readiness and performance of $100M of product on a nightly basis, and no one ever demands an explaination on how they're managing it.
What we should get.
"I noticed you put Froese out to take an offensive zone draw after coming back from a TV timeout, when you were down a goal with only two minutes left in the game. What made you believe the 13th/14th forward should have taken that faceoff instead of someone a little higher up, in terms of both skill and performance?"
What we actually get.
"Coach, isn't Johnny Gaudreau off to a great start this season? Is it a good thing when a player of his calibre produces on the scoresheet? Also, would you say that most NHL players, as a whole, are in better shape than my 57 year old uncle? Why is that?"
