I get why you want to lock them in before the fifth year option kicks in, to spread out the cap hit of the extension into the last rookie year, but we just saw the downside of that. As we see now anyway though the cap is kinda not real, you can constantly manipulate it with restructures and extensions, so even if it costs you a few extra million to wait until after year five to extend them, you also keep open the option of not being ####ed with a bad contract.
Not only that, but you can always just franchise them for a couple of years after that if you still don't want to make a commitment.

I think the issue still is that you have to find someone to replace them if you let them walk, and that's hard to do if they're just good enough to win you the division or snag a wild card spot.

Gonna be interesting to see what the Eagles do at #6 overall if one of Fields, Wilson, or Lance are sitting there. I'd imagine the Eagles have all three rated higher than Hurts, but that's going to be a tough pill to swallow for Howie.

I'd imagine Sewell goes #3 and then the Bengals and Falcons both try to trade down with QB-needy teams, leaving the Eagles with their choice of Chase, Smith, or Pitts. Parsons would be there, too, but the Eagles don't traditionally value LBs that highly.
