Wouldn't the distance and time delay with the speed of light make it impossible for mission control to make any meaningful changes to it as it lands?

Follow-up, they just said the parachute deployed, with the time delay for info to come back to earth, does that mean it deployed in reality 14min ago?
Yup by the time the signals were received that it had entered the atmosphere the rover had already landed.

It's all pre-programmed, the lander lands itself.
