I haven't studied plate tectonics since university and back then I was mostly interested in the deep seated mantle plumes and their interaction and impact on upper mantle circulation and tectonics. That being said, it makes sense that deep slip would trigger something to cause this quake. The Juan de Fuca plate is being subducted under the North American plate as the continent moves westward.
