And wasn't that after the NHL tried to level off the odds of winning basically because of the Oilers?

It was just really bad luck for the NHL that the Oilers were the ones to win.

Without McDavid though, they may have drafted Eichel or Marner, and propbably would have been in the running for Matthews instead of JP. They probably would have been bad enough the following year to have a shot at Makar or Pettersson.

Hard to say how the butterfly effect of suckage would have played out. They would certainly have been a lot worse in the short term, but without McNugget, they may have have built a better team just by falling ass-backwards into it. Landing McDavid has pretty much ensured that they have zero depth and no flexibility.
