Interesting. The Suicide Squad Joker was told entirely from the perspective of Harley Quinn, who isn't the most reliable narrator. It does leave a lot of room for a new interpretation of the Leto Joker. Things like the jewelry and "damaged" tattoo are actually things you'd expect someone like Harley Quinn to imagine while idolizing the Joker.
