Anyone who has spent any amount of time watching Mikael Backlund over the course of his career should not be the least bit concerned about him. He consistently starts every year a little slow, and consistently finishes very strong. I see nothing in the mechanics of his game right now to suggest that is suddenly about to change.

It also doesn't change that he's fallen to the third line center and that is a substantial amount of money to invest in a player at that level. If the plan is to leave Lindholm at center, then Backlund is expansion fodder primarily because of his salary. This is going to be an opportunity to possibly correct the imbalance in the salary structure, and whoever is running the show come the expansion draft they will be looking to lose money from the bottom of the roster if possible.
You made a claim about the PRESENT value of Backlund's contract that is patently false. We can agree that in the long term there is a risk of this becoming a cap-problem, but that has yet to happen.

I agree that Backlund is likely to be exposed in the expansion draft, and in large measure because of his contract. But I also think if he is exposed he will be selected because he is an excellent player. Backlund could be the best available forward Leaguewide, and Seattle will likely not be a cap team for a few years.
