Therein lies the problem.
The only coach who did that was fired in April 2016, with the GM citing systems as the primary reason.
This was a coach whose roster included such possession stalwarts as Kris Russell, Deryk Engelland, Dennis Wideman, and Jyrki Jokipakka and a much younger roster still learning to play at the NHL level, after a season where possession numbers had still gone upwards from the previous season.
He also had the worst goaltending in the NHL. There's a game at Buffalo by Hiller that year that defines that season in a nutshell, I wonder if the "highlights" are still on NHL.com.
Sadly that was the last remotely competent coach we had - and I'm not even saying he was a great one.
