I think they're just starting to get in the rhythm of things. Not an ideal start by any means but they had a really poorly timed break in there and took a few games to find some semblance of their game again. So that has handicapped the already small sample size.
I keep going back to the fact that every season it takes a month or more for teams to get into the flow. We're not even there and had less prep than normal.
Key depth guys like Backlund and Ryan have a lot more to give and should improve as we go along. Lucic too. Those guys need games to get up to speed at their ages.
So I want to see how it plays out.
If they can have on average better first periods I think they'll win much more frequently. First thing is fixing the starts. Don't lose the first period. Go from there.

What are the advanced stats, at 5on5 when considered relative to the score?
Flames sure seem to suck if they are tied or have a lead 8 games in. Only time they generate chances at 5on5 is after being down by a goal or two.
It's also pretty cute that we're just a few days after the player only meeting, yet back to complaining about garbage first periods and getting down multiple goals early.
