But honestly just extend 3 on 3. No one gets hurt 3 on 3 since there’s no hitting so injury risk is small. It’s like basketball OT and they manage that just fine. Half the players don’t even see the ice anyway. And if you get rid of the loser point, teams are going to go all out to win.

I would be more supportive of eliminating the extra point only if the shootout were eliminated. Having grown up in an era which tolerated ties in hockey I have had a very difficult time getting over the gimmick, and have always felt that the current format rightly rewards ties like the old format always did.
But I expect things would not at all play out as you imagine they would. The reason the extra point was introduced in the first place was precisely because of how teams would protect the tie after they had earned it. In a winner-take-all situation, teams would be much more prone to sit back, to slow plays down, and to wait the other team out to make a mistake. It would not make the quality of hockey better, rather more likely having the opposite effect.
