Sure. Probably went something like this.
Random GM: Hey Brad, interested in moving Sam Bennett?
Treliving: No, not really. We still believe in Sammy. He just needs some time to find his game and we believe that is happening in short order. It's all part of the process.
Random GM: If you say so Brad, but he appears to need a change of scenery. We're interested in taking a chance on him and giving him opportunity that doesn't appear to be there in Calgary.
Treliving: Okay, what are you offering?
Random GM: We'll throw you a 4th rounder or "player X in the same situation of not having panned out."
Treliving: I'm thinking a first round pick. Sam is a former 4th over all pick and he's electric in the post-season.
Random GM: Brad, get serious. He's a sub 20 point producer at this point in his career. He's been good for you in the post season, but you've had your head caved in when that happens. Plus, you're paying him a lot of money to produce little. We're taking the risk here. A 4th seems about all the guy is worth at this point, and that may be generous considering the cap situation, his qualification status, and the up coming expansion draft where I might have to spend a slot on protecting him.
Treliving: Okay, the 4th makes sense, if you include two seconds. Sam is an electric player!
Random GM: Thanks Brad, but no thanks. When you come around to your senses give me a call. I might still be interested, but remember that with each passing game my offer is dropping. *click*
