The Republicans did the vote on the constitutionality of the senate trial as a way of saying, "hey make it about the constitutionality, and we can easily let you off."
But it's not good enough for Trump to not be convicted. He wants to use this as a high profile airing of all his conspiracy theories, even if that makes it much harder for Republicans to acquit him. Don't get me wrong, they'll still acquit him, but they'll look far worse for doing so.
