There is some truth to this. Not unlike in football when a team gets up by multiple scores and throws out a vanilla prevent defense which leads to garbage time yards and scores where fans of the losing team at the end of the game try to convince themselves the the offense was really good with 400 yards and over 20 points when the reality is that when the game was on the line the offense just wasn't good enough.
