My preference is to sign two of, in order of preference, Walker, Paxton, Odorizzi.
Failing that a two or 3 year deal at whatever AAV Bauer wants. If he wants to be the highest paid player, give him $40 million per season for three years. That way the contract is done when it's time to start paying the young guys. Ight be a pipe dream but supposedly that is what the Mets are offering.
My least favourite of the options is trading away young assets. No, not all of them are going to work out, but if you are signing short term free agents while your young core is on the rookie contracts, you can extend the window.
Ideally, a few of the young upcoming assets are in the bigs in three years helping form the core when you are buying free agent years with extensions to the young guys of today when they are arbitration eligible.
