Technically I think they committed sedition and not treason. Sedition is an act to threaten or encourage others to undermine the authority or overthrow the government in place. Something as simple as flag burning in the United States can lead to sedition charges. Treason is where you actively engage with another nation state to do harm toward, betray, or overthrow the government of your country. Turning over state secrets to Russia or China would be considered a treasonous activity. While I would like to see all these clowns to end up in prison, they should be there for sedition. I don't see treason charges sticking.
