I was going to say he didn't as much ask difficult questions as curiosity questions it made him stand out in his field, and he was brilliant for it helping his guests to really open up.
As one journalist (Dan Rather I think). If a reporter goes to a fire and questions a fire fighter he'd ask "How did the fire start?" Larry King would ask "What made you want to be a fire fighter?". The guy interviewed everyone of note, and had no fear at all. He's a tower over modern day journalists.
