PLD is at a similar level to Monahan today, but he is 22 with another RFA contract two years away. The control makes that swap a no brainer.
If the Flames have another poor playoffs they are going to end up trading Monahan and/or Gaudreau and they will never get a player of PLDs caliber.
If the trade is there, make it. Build the team around Lindholm, PLD, Tkachuk, and the up and commers on D. It extends the window, mixes things up in the short term, and reduces the pressure next summer with just one player to potentially trade.
I don't know what else it will take, but the Winnipeg deal is a bit overrated. Laine isn't going to fit well in Columbus, or with Torts. Monahan gives Columbus a similar player so they don't take a step back. Plus Calgary is adding so they also get that. It's a log shot, but I would take the swing.
